Enigmatic, disturbing, gripping.
Strange Pictures by Japanese author Uketsu is like nothing I’ve ever read before. It’s got the eerie, unsettling atmosphere of a thriller or crime/horror novel. Set off not only by the gripping, intriguing style of writing but by the, indeed strange, pictures that each chapter centers around. It starts with two student members of a uni’s Paranormal Club reading old blog posts from a man whose wife’s drawings contain clues to a troubling revelation.
From then on, the mystery around these enigmatic drawings (the picture of a home and the sketch of a mountain range) and the disturbing meaning behind them starts to unfold. The reader, instead of just getting to witness the unfolding of the truth, is also invited to try and figure out the clues, put the pieces together and peel back the layers of the story themself. So, put on your best Sherlock-hat or just your favorite reading glasses and enjoy this truly unique way of storytelling.
