In dialogue between works from the early 20th century and contemporary artists the face proves to be the setting for emotions which are molded by the respective individuals self-image as well as by social conventions. The face simultaneously is a site of presentation and concealment, of staging and withdrawal. With four thematic emphasesPrivatim: Sleep-Ecstasy-Death, Beyond Stereotyped Roles, Expressive Physiognomy and Mirrorings and Doppelgängersthe exhibition investigates the face within the dynamic field of self-expression, self-image and social codes.
