In early modern Europe, musical innovations in composition and performance practice created new demands on sacred architecture. This development was reflected most significantly in the installation of choir pulpits, musician galleries and organ lofts, which served as venues for top-class ensembles and established a permanent place for music in the sacred space. To what extent did musical innovations influence the remodelling and new construction of churches? How did composers and musicians respond to the architectural and acoustic qualities of certain spaces?
