In the five works detailed in this publication, Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz combine the media of film or video with photography, installation, and text, while simultaneously incorporating materials from the historical archives of photography and film. They reflect on the interplay of sexuality, sexual perversions, and photography, as well as their relationship to colonial history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inspired by a kind of conceptual, queer art history, especially the works of performance artist and filmmaker Jack Smith, the Boudry/Lorenz films demonstrate their independence in terms of camerawork, performance, props, costumes, and sound, while at the same time, the way that the contemporary performers embody historical materials unites various time periods together in Temporal Drag.
