In Duderstadt's more than 1000-year history, borders have played a specific role until the recent past. Anyone visiting the idyllic half-timbered town in the Eichsfeld region can learn a lot about the mediaeval fortifications. These include the town gate's West Tower, with its "devilishly" twisted spire. In the 20th century, the GDR border fortifications ran through the Eichsfeld. The Borderland Museum at the former border crossing is a reminder of this. From here, the German Green Belt leads to the Gut Herbigshagen Nature Experience Centre. The city guide focuses on the key sights and provides background informations for a better understanding. When strolling through Duderstadt, street map sketches help with orientation.
