Der Sammelband gliedert sich in Historisches, Empirisches und Klinisches. Zunächst untersuchen die Autoren im historischen Abschnitt den wechselnden Bedeutungsgehalt von Dissoziation und Psychose in den vergangenen 150 Jahren und gehen der Frage nach, ob das Konzept Schizophrenie seine Wurzeln in der frühen Dissoziationstheorie hat. Der empirische Teil widmet sich der Forschung über die phänomenologische Schnittmenge psychotischer und dissoziativer Störungen. Die Wirksamkeit von psychotherapeutischen Maßnahmen überprüft schließlich der klinische Abschnitt. Weiteres Augenmerk legen die Verfasser hier auf die Frage, inwieweit psychotische Symptome aus einer dissoziativen Perspektive erklärt werden können. Der Band, der mit seinem speziellen Fokus wissenschaftliches Neuland betritt, schließt mit der Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Dissoziation und Psychose und widmet sich der Frage, ob Letztere als Konzept inzwischen überholt ist.
