In this book the author makes a study of language, culture and translating, with special attention given to the relationship between Chinese and English. This book consists of five chapters. Chapter One discusses different views on culture, and elicits the mutual interdependence between language and culture.Special attention is paid to the importance of cultural teaching and learning. In Chapter Two, the focus is upon the close relationship between culture and translating, highlighting the importance of biculturalism to a translator. Chapter Three reviews some influential translation theories, i.e., functional equivalence and the semantic and communicative translation. It also treats of translating culture-loaded expressions in terms of semiotics, and classifies signs reflecting cultural differences into 3 different types: polysemic, synonymic and divergent. Chapter Four is devoted to discussing the strategies of translating some culture-loaded words and expressions, i.e., kinship terms, color terms, idioms and advertising. Chapter Five serves as the concluding part.

Gao Jun is an associate professor of the English Department at University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. She got her doctorate degree in linguistics from Shanghai International Studies Uinversity in 2008. Her research interests include contrastive linguistics,discourse analysis and sociolinguistics.
